The faculty of the Department of Art and Music at Framingham State University facilitate a collaborative, innovative and interdisciplinary learning environment which focuses on academic excellence in the areas of visual art, art history, art education, music history and music theory. As part of a liberal arts institution, the faculty encourages hybrid and tangential relations with other fields as a way of aiding the student in identifying the most effective way to articulate their individual vision. The program is designed to help students pursue creative endeavors while also imparting specific skills appropriate to the various disciplines of fine arts, design, art education, and scholarly and professional endeavors in art history, museum studies and music.

The department offers the following majors: Bachelor of Arts in Art History and Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art with concentrations in Art Education, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Illustration, Painting, Printmaking, and Sculpture; as well as, the Master of Education (Art) degree. Additionally, the department offers a Post-Baccalaureate (Art Education).

The American Sign Language Major provides students with a solid foundation in American Sign Language as well as core courses that cover deaf history, culture, literature and linguistics in a social justice framework. All students in the ASL major complete similar coursework in the first two years of the program. As part of the language courses, students engage in community-based projects where they can engage with Deaf/Hard of Hearing/DeafBlind people in authentic interactions.Students concentrating in ASL/English interpreting go on to pursue intensive courses in interpreting, communication, ethics and research in the final two years. Interpreting concentration students complete an off-site practicum in their senior year.Students in the Deaf Studies concentration pursue a major advocacy project as part of their Social Justice course.

Framingham State’s BS degree in Biology provides excellent preparation for a wide variety of career paths in the health professions, biotechnology, wildlife conservation, industry, research, and education. Our diverse curriculum includes courses in organismal biology, human and animal physiology, cell and molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, ecology, wildlife biology, botany, and marine biology.

Every Biology major selects a concentration according to their interests and career goals. The five concentrations offered are General Biology (UBIG), Wildlife and Environmental Biology (UBIW), Biotechnology (UBIO), Biology Secondary Education (UBIT), and Pre-Health Biology (UBIP). See the Program links at the bottom of this page for specific Biology core and concentration requirements.



In addition to regular course work, every Biology major participates in an intensive capstone research program. Through first-hand experience students come to understand the scientific process and appreciate the complexity and diversity of biological systems. The program also gives the students invaluable training in scientific writing, data analysis, and oral presentation skills.

Achieve Your Academic and Professional Goals in the Department of Communication, Media, and Performance at Framingham State University


Effective communication is a key to success in any endeavor. Communication, Media, and Performance students engage in a wide-ranging inquiry into and practice of numerous forms of human communication. Our curriculum successfully combines critical analysis with purposeful application of skills. We have six experienced tenured faculty members offering a variety of courses to over 120 students across the program. Seeking further opportunities via related minors, internships, and independent and directed study projects is strongly encouraged. The Department offers courses leading to a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.


The Department offers courses leading to a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with concentrations in Computer Science and Information Systems, and minors in Computer Science and Information Systems. The goal of these programs is to train graduates for successful careers in industry and to prepare students for graduate studies.


Students are encouraged to participate in the full-time Cooperative education option that allows them to participate in two full-time 6 month co-ops. Alternatively a student can elect to register for a part-time internship during their regular academic semester for up to two course credits in a single semester. These opportunities enhance the academic experience with hands-on training, provide real-world problem solving, and (normally)students receive compensation in the process. Such experience is also beneficial in seeking post-graduate employment.

The English Department offers an extensive program of poetry, prose, drama, film, linguistics, writing, and journalism for majors and non-majors alike. As an English major, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the world through the study of literature, language, and writing. The strong reading, critical thinking, writing, and speaking skills you'll develop will prepare you for any career you wish to pursue after college. Internship opportunities for English majors include on- and off-campus positions in a range of fields, including digital humanities, public relations, social media, library science, and grant writing. English majors go on to rewarding careers in these fields, as well as in publishing, editing, teaching, technical writing, journalism, business, and law. Many English majors also pursue graduate and professional degrees.



We offer courses in British, American, European, and non-Western literature, as well as creative writing and professional writing. In Spring 2021, our courses include Contemporary Multiethnic Young Adult Literature, The Graphic Novel, Introduction to Digital Humanities, African American Women Writers, Contemporary Global Literature, Persuasive Writing, and Feature Writing. Classes are discussion-based, and professors value the warm relationships they develop with you.

The Department of Chemistry and Food Science is unique in that it offers strong majors in two fields. The programs complement one other, producing Food Science majors with an exceptionally strong background in chemistry, and providing Chemistry and Biochemistry majors with the opportunity to take electives in more applied areas such as food chemistry, food analysis, and food engineering. Undergraduate research opportunities are also enhanced by the combination of these program areas. The outstanding achievement records, employment opportunities, and graduate school placements enjoyed by Department graduates attest to the strength of these programs.

An excellent undergraduate education is provided by the structured curricula of the Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Food Science majors. Each program satisfies the University's General Education Domain II-B (Natural Sciences) course and laboratory requirements. WHAT IS FOOD SCIENCE?

"Food science draws from many disciplines such as biology, chemical engineering, and biochemistry in an attempt to better understand food processes and ultimately improve food products for the general public. As the stewards of the field, food scientists study the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food. By applying their findings, they are responsible for developing the safe, nutritious foods and innovative packaging that line supermarket shelves everywhere.

Geography is about understanding the places where we live, the conditions in other places, and the connections between all these places. Understanding geography helps us create fair, safe, and economically and environmentally sustainable places, and helps us to succeed in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.



The Geography Department offers concentrations in Global Studies, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and coordinate majors in education; as well as a major in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. The department also houses the Environmental Science and Policy major, which is an interdisciplinary major with the Biology Department.



Our graduates continue their studies in graduate school, or pursue careers in areas as diverse as: environmental engineering, community and regional planning, conservation, habitat and resource protection, education, and business. They work in the private sector, for non-profits, and for agencies at the community, state, and federal levels of government.

The Bachelor of Arts, with a Major in Liberal Studies is intended as an opportunity to enable students, under faculty-advisor guidance, to design a unique program of study not readily available within the existing curricular structure of the University. This major aims at providing alternative avenues for accommodating the individual academic interest of students. A student may either (a) pursue in-depth study in an area or areas not presently offered as majors at Framingham State University or (b) may choose a broad spectrum of course work among a number of disciplines in lieu of the traditional one-discipline course of study.



Students in this major have the opportunity to experience a broad course of study in the traditional liberal arts and sciences which fosters skills such as conceptual analysis, critical thinking, disciplined writing, creative problem-solving, ethical and moral reasoning, and strong leadership.

A Bachelor’s degree is typically required for these positions.

The study of mathematics and statistics leads to diverse career opportunities.

Careers in mathematics rank highly among job rating sites. In the 2017 rankings on JobsRated.com, statistician, mathematician and data scientist all ranked in the top 10 for careers. CareerCast ranked mathematician, statistician, and actuary as numbers 1, 3, and 4, respectively, on its list of The 10 Best Jobs of 2014. CareerCast included mathematics among the nations best for 2015 as well, stating that careers in mathematics "offer abundant opportunities for advancement and, most surprisingly, often deviate from common perceptions about math." Jenna Goudreau's May 15, 2012 Forbes article "The 15 Most Valuable College Majors", ranks majors in applied mathematics, mathematics, and statistics among "the 15 most valuable majors in the current marketplace", stating that these majors "are increasingly in demand and well-paid."

Recent graduates of the Framingham State Mathematics Department have begun successful careers in finance, data analysis, software engineering and actuarial work. Other alumni are teaching at the elementary or secondary education levels.

The Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Center for Integrated Science Learning was established by Framingham State University, Christa’s alma mater, to honor her commitment to teaching. In creating the McAuliffe Center, the University was determined to address the increasingly critical issues of the attraction, retention and education of the best and brightest as future science teachers by honoring the vision, values, and ideas of Teacher-Astronaut Christa Corrigan McAuliffe. The Muslim Student Associations (MSA) is formed to provide Muslim students at Framingham State University (FSU) with a safe space where they can gather and meet with each other. By providing this space, we hope to connect fellow peers on campus that share the same religion which will give opportunities to make new friends. We also create this club so that we can also be a source of information for other students on-campus, that are not necessarily Muslim, to come find more about Islam and Muslim people. This club will also try to create cultural events promoting diversity on the campus and have fun, regular meetings during the semester.

All meetings are at 5 PM in O'Connor 120B unless noted otherwise. Please check Instagram and Campus Groups for the most accurate meeting times.

We pray Jummah at the CIE in O'Connor 120B every Friday at 1:30 PM during the semester except when the school is closed, on winter/spring break, and during the summer break.

The Nursing Department offers RN-to-BS and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Degree Programs



The University offers a Bachelor of Science with a major in Nursing for registered nurses who already have completed either an Associate Degree or a Diploma Program in Nursing. The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at Framingham State University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.ccneaccreditation.org).



The curriculum provides a broad educational base in the humanities and in the natural and social sciences. The program encourages self-directed learning, critical thinking, independent action, and professional awareness. The goal is preparation of a nurse who is able to function as a generalist in a variety of health-care settings. The course of study provides a base for graduate work in education, research, clinical specialization, or administration.

Offering a comprehensive curriculum for a Bachelor’s Degree in Earth System Science, a two-year Pre-Engineering Program, and a wide array of courses in the physical sciences.

The Department of Physics and Earth Sciences provides quality education in Physics and Earth sciences for all students at Framingham State University. It offers students a new Earth Science major, providing a broad spectrum of courses to ensure a deep understanding of the systems that govern our home planet. It is host to FSU's Pre-Engineering program, transferring 3rd-year students by Articulation Agreement to UMass Lowell, UMass Dartmouth, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to complete Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering. In addition, the Department offers minors in Physics and in Earth System Science, hosts the Natural Sciences Interdisciplinary Coordinate Major for students in Elementary Education, and provides content courses for future elementary and middle school teachers.


The Department of Physics and Earth Sciences provides foundational required courses for students majoring in biology and chemistry, including pre-medical, pre-veterinary, and Food Science majors, as well as courses satisfying General Education requirements for physical science and laboratory for all students.


The Department offers the advantage of small class sizes, individual attention, and faculty deeply dedicated to student learning. Faculty have training and/or deep interest in science pedagogy and constantly strive to research and practice the best methodologies of teaching and learning in the physical sciences. The Department is dedicated to enhancing, nurturing and respecting diversity among its faculty, staff, and students.

You might ask the same question about getting a Political Science degree: What can I do now? Students major in Political Science for many reasons. Some go on to work in government, law enforcement, journalism, teaching, others use training in management to work in non-governmental and non-profit organizations in the public or private sectors. Graduates manage campaigns, run for office, or manage an office. Some go on to professional schools: law, public administration, public policy or business. Others pursue masters or doctorates in political science. In other words, Politics is an interesting and dynamic field of study that opens up many doors and prepares students for viable careers both in and out of politics and government. You learn skills that apply in many settings. Learn about representation, public policy and legislating in the classroom and then work in an office of a state or national legislator as an intern. Spend a semester in a semester long election simulation and then work in a campaign. We offer classes, internships, a semester in Washington, independent projects of your design, Moot Court, Model United Nations and many more ways for you to think and engage in society. You pursue your interests!

This is a campus-wide pre-professional program available to any student from any major who may be interested in a career in the medical or health professions. For students who are interested in a health career, but are not quite sure where to start, it might be helpful to research different professions, such as medical, veterinary, dental, pharmacy, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner, as well as occupational or physical therapy.

We strongly recommend that students interested in the medical and health professions meet with one of the Pre-Health Program advisors no later than their sophomore year and continue to meet periodically. This will help us to guide you through courses that will best prepare you for your program of study while completing your degree in an efficient manner.


We also provide assistance in reviewing and submitting applications for professional programs, as well as committee letters for qualifying students to necessary program. Students should be aware that in order to be a competitive applicant they should have: strong graduating GPA, shadowing/clinical experience, leadership, volunteering/community service, and display cultural competence,

Ram Peer Leader positions work with students in campus leadership positions of : Black and Gold Orientation Leaders, SEALS Peer Health Educators, Resident Assistant (RA), and Admissions Tour Guides. Our goal is to provide shared resources in the training and development of our student leaders and streamline the application process.

Application Information/Process:

Returning candidates will need to upload a current resume, while new candidates will complete four essay questions related to leadership at Framingham State. Students wishing to return to a position and a apply for a new position are welcome (and encouraged!) to do so and will do both the resume and the essays.

Please be mindful of the twenty hour week limitation in place for student employees during the academic years (non-summer positions).

Resources and Training:
When possible, the RPL team provides joint workshops and training opportunities for students in the common leadership positions. These details will be posted in RamLink and shared within teams. Additionally, RPLs may opt in to join special campus projects throughout the year.

The Sociology & Criminology Department is home to two majors and three minors. It is also home to a vibrant community of committed faculty and engaged students. The relationships between students and faculty – through teaching, researching and service – are what makes it all come together. Sociology Program Learning Objectives:

Recognize the impact of social patterns, human diversity, cultural difference, and globalization on social life. [Comprehension]

Use sociological principles, theories, and concepts in the interpretation of social phenomena. [Application]

Design and conduct an empirical sociological research project using quantitative and qualitative methods. [Synthesis]

The Office of Wellness and Prevention provides health and wellness education & resources to the FSU community & encourages students to see the connection between their lifestyle choices & their successes.

The Office of Wellness and Prevention is also home to the S.E.A.L.S. (Support, Education, Action, Leadership, Strength) Peer Health Education program. S.E.A.L.S. Peer Health Educators are paid student leaders trained to provide the FSU community with interactive, inclusive, educational programs focused on health and wellness topics. The Department of World Languages at Framingham State University offers a variety of classes in the areas of language arts, literature, linguistics, and culture.

The ability to communicate effectively in more than one language is at the core of the mission of the World Languages Department. Expressing oneself in languages beyond one’s native language makes it possible to view the world in new ways and engage with different cultural communities. Proficiency in other languages enables individuals to transit borders and experience the interconnectedness of our world. The benefits of learning other languages range from improved self-expression in one’s first language, enhanced cognitive abilities, sharpened critical thinking, and professional marketability.

Through literature, culture and linguistics courses as well as study-abroad opportunities, students gain an understanding of the diversity that is the very fabric of the communities in and around Framingham as well as across the globe.
